The Story

Taki wakes from what seemed like a very important dream. But in an unfamiliar room and not in his body…but that of a girl! On the other hand, Mitsuha, a teen girl, is tired of living in a mountain village. She pleads to God “Please, let me be a handsome Tokyo boy in my next life!” The next morning, Mitsuha awakens as a high school male. Based on information around her, she learns whose body she inhabits. His name is Taki. The two have switched places! When they wake up again, they’ve returned to their former selves. But sleep brings the body swap again and again. Mysteriously, the pattern continues daily. The two fumble about, unaccustomed to each other’s bodies, but start communicating by memo. As they awkwardly overcome one challenge after another, a bond develops between the two- one that evolves into something more romantic. However, there’s something they still don’t know… The unexpected is about to be revealed.

Your Name focuses on Taki and Mitsuha, whose lives crossed paths when they realised they had been switching bodies. It was like a dream: waking up to a strikingly different lifestyle — city vs countryside — reverting back to their original bodies the next day, and the cycle continued. While it was all pure fun at first, they soon came to see that their differences in mannerism and character were changing people’s opinions about them. Mitsuha helped Taki to score a date with his crush at work; Taki increased Mitsuha’s popularity in school. But after witnessing the comet, they stopped switching bodies. Taki, who tried to contact Mitsuha but failed, then set off on a trip to find her, without even knowing exactly where her village was, except for a sketch of the place. In the process, something was not quite right as the truth slowly dawned upon them.

The Good
Enhanced with beautiful graphics, the plot is truly one of a kind. It was hilarious to see how they messed up each other’s lives in the beginning, coupled with nuances in the feminine and masculine way of speaking in the Japanese language. Taki and Mitsuha had to resolve to leaving notes in their mobile phones for each other to refer to, the dos and don’ts to keep their public images in check.

The magic core of this film is musubi (結び), which is used to refer to tying threads, connecting people and the flow of time. It is a captivating concept to play on, to illustrate how people and things interweave just like how time intertwines. It may twist and tangle but it may also break and connect again.

The (Not That) Bad
Have you ever had the moment when a show or book is so good you do not want to finish it or do not wish for it to end? Your Name is definitely one of them. After watching the film may leave you with an emptiness in your heart and you may yearn to relive the story.

And The Summary
Your Name is a science-fiction animation that is something original yet thought-inducing. It is not surprising that the film topped Japan’s box office weeks after weeks. This is a fantastic movie you must grab your friends, some popcorn and head to the theatres to watch.By Yian Lu (
